Are Pelmets Outdated?
18 December, 2024
One of the things that we love the most about interior design and styling, is the diversity we get from every client, in every home, and with every order.
From modern automatic blinds to classic curtains, bold colours, and light and whimsical fabrics, every home and every project is different – always keeping us on our toes and reminding us that no interior concept or style ever truly goes out of fashion.
Once a staple of home design, pelmets have seemingly disappeared from modern homes, in favour of clean curtain roles and exposed blind fixings. But does that mean they’re outdated, or do they represent a trend that’s coming back into fashion?
A pelmet is a structure which covers the top of a curtain rail or blind fixing, essentially concealing where and how it is attached to the wall. Available in a plethora of materials and finishes, some of which draw attention to the structure while others are more subtle and neutral, pelmets help to streamline the way a window covering is fixed to the wall. They can also add an extra layer to block some light – popular with those who want to alleviate the risk of light filtering in around the top of curtains.
The question is not necessarily whether pelmets are on-trend or not, but rather whether a homeowner wants the look that pelmets create around the top of their windows and/or doors.
This very much depends on the style of your home and the material and finish of the pelmet. We often find that simpler boxy pelmets covered in fabric align with more modern spaces, while decorative and highly intricate pelmets boast a traditional finish.
Homeowners who want to benefit from the extra light-blocking properties of pelmets, while keeping their home aesthetic modern, can match the outward design of the pelmet with their curtains or blinds – so it simply becomes a continuation of the window covering.
If pelmets are something that you are keen to explore when designing your windows, our advice is to consider the measurements and whether you have space around the top of the windows and/or doors before installing. Pelmets ideally need sufficient space to cover the railing or fixing with some extra room and look best when there is a gap between the pelmet and the ceiling.
